Blogging Do's and Don'ts

I'm coming up on my one year blogging anniversary and man, I have learned a lot. I have also made the most wonderful friends, been introduced to some incredible opportunities, and have become more creative AND disciplined than I could have imagined. Let's just say I'm thankful.
I'm thankful and well, I want to share some of my newfound knowledge with you. I've put together a little list of the things I have learned over the past year. That being said I am no expert, and of course, these opinions are all mine and mine alone. Sooo if you want music to play when people load your blog, start picking out your songs. =P

Just a note: these tips are mostly directed to bloggers who are looking to grow their readership and get involved in the blogging community (it's a great one). =)

Do's And Don'ts of Blogging
Do blog regularly. Readers are drawn to new content, and if you constantly provide new and interesting posts they'll keep coming back.
Do schedule and set aside time for blogging in a way that best suites your life. I've found that writing blog posts during the work week can often be stressful for me so I write and schedule a few blog posts on Sunday evenings while Nadav and I are slowing down and watching some of our favorite TV shows (cough Mad Men and Games of Thrones). That way I have blog posts ready and don't feel so rushed during the work week to knock out some posts.
On that note don't feel guilty about not blogging. Blogging should be fun, and not a job. Trust me, I'm still working on this lesson...

Do connect with other bloggers. Leave lots of comments all over the blogosphere, join twitter and start chatting with other bloggers you might have things in common with. Chances are, you'll make some friends. I also highly recommend attending blogger meetups, or gasp.. planning some yourself. I promise you won't regret it =)
However, don't get so wrapped up in social media that you neglect those in your "real life". It's a challenging balance, but it's an important one. Truth is, replying to that tweet can wait just a little bit, but hugging your significant other shouldn't wait.

Do make things pretty. A pretty blog design will help grab the attention of readers, and large pretty pictures are always a plus but...
Don't rely on a pretty blog design. Write, write, write, and write some more. Readers are interested in finding out who you are and what makes you special. Let's just say a pretty blog design will help bring all the readers to the yard, but interesting content will keep them coming back for more.

Do express yourself and share your interests with your readers, but puhleeeease
Don't set music to automatically play when someone loads your blog. Although I also  love the Beatles, The 500 Days of Summer" soundtrack, and Jason Mraz please don't interrupt my attempts to watch The Real Housewives of Orange County and read blogs with your music... =P

Do play nicely. It's scary to put yourself out on the internet, but it's something you have to do in order to grow your blog. Be kind and thoughtful when you love comments, we're all just doing our best.
Don't take negative feedback too seriously. If your blog continues to grow it's going to happen... you will receive a mean comment(s) at some point. Trust me, it won't feel good, but it's just what happens when you put yourself out there. You just have to keep on truckin and work on growing that thick skin. Focus on the good blogging has brought to your life, and try to refrain from focusing on the negative. If you ask me this whole blogging thing is so worth it.

and most importantly..
Do be yourself. Blogging will rapidly lose its appeal if you're trying to present yourself as someone you are not through your blog.
Do blog for yourself, whatever your reasons may be. Try not to get lost in the appeal of sponsors and free loot, because in the end.. if you don't love it you won't want to do it.

What have you learned from blogging?

oh i totally agree with the music on autoplay... i really don't like that, and sometimes, i just click out of that blog asap so i don't have to listen to it...

great tips! i'm still learning so much about blogging... it's really fun, but i also am learning that it shouldn't become a "job"....

Lots of good advice! I neglected my blog I did for a social media class, but recently I've realized how fun blogging is, and I'm slowly trying to establish it.

I look forward to reading your blog every morning :)

Congrats on sppn to be one year of blogging!
You seem like a blogger that has been blogging much longer than that. (I mean that in the best possible way.)

This was a great post!
Lots of wonderful tips. And, I completely agree about the music. It is nice to have available to the readers, but not on automatically when I arrive at a blog.

Your first blogoversary! Wahoo! These are great tips for newbies and great reminders for the old pros. I'm also still working on balancing things appropriately so I don't feel burdened or obligated!

Happy blogiversary girl! :)

I totally agree. I think it´s so important to do this for yourself and put content on your blog you just dig instead of fussing over people´s opinions!

love that pic btw! :)

Whoa dude - your notoriety for only one year of blogging is impressive. Good for you for figuring things out and sharing it with the rest of us. I totally agree that you should blog for you. I sometimes censor myself (because I swear like a sailor). I think these do's and don'ts are great reminders for all types of bloggers.

I JUST went to a website yesterday at workthat had music bumpin' in the background. I had to try and close it as quickly as possible haha... I mean, not everyone peruses the internet with 100% attention on the internet.

Also, thanks for all the tips :)

such great tips, thanks! As someone who is relatively new to the blogging world this is extremely helpful. THANKS!!!

Well said, Tammy! Serisouly, this is perfect. I couldn't have put it better.

My worst experience thus far was the negativity thing, but it is bound to happen and thick skin is essential!

I have found that the times I completely stop caring about what anyone else thinks and just blog what I'm feeling or thinking, those are the best posts and get the most attention. It's kind of ironic how when you stop caring and obsessing over something so much and trying to make it successful that that is when you find the most growth.

That's it?! A year? I could have sworn you'd been doing this a lot longer. It sure appears that way. Then again, OF COURSE you have a readership that is THIS strong and engaged after only a year... you're smart, real and just a fun gal to be following. Well done, Tammy! And thank you as always for being the wonderful and wise blog friend that you are. You definitely have the "connecting with other bloggers" guideline DOWN.

CHEERS!

Thank you for sharing these tips. It is so easy to get caught up in numbers and growth and to feel discouraged at times, but it is important to remember that blogging is an outlet and a way to showcase oneself as an individual and things they like/their experiences. Very encouraging post!

I couldn't agree more with the point you made about music on a blog. I have my own taste in music, and I probably already have it playing already in the background...

Great post, great advice! I'm very new to the blogosphere, although I have been a reader for years... Definitely feels different and sometimes scary being on the other side. This all makes sense. Bookmarked for future reference :-)

Just found this and what great advice! It is nerve racking putting yourself out there in the blog world - but I am learning that just being yourself - makes blogging more fun and less stressful! Thanks again!

Jessica said...

Thank you so much for this :).
I've had TWO blogs before the one I have now and with those ones, I was always trying to be someone I wasn't. I was trying to keep up with the blogosphere, writing posts that I didn't care about and I think that really showed.

I just started a new one a couple months ago, and I only blog when I have something that I really want to show or say and I absolutely love it!

I only have 2 followers right now haha but the best part is that this time (and for the first time since I started to blog) I really don't care. I will blog for those 2 followers and I will blog for me! :) And that's honestly all I care about!!! :) yay.
