Tradition

So Saturday night started like this,
because holidays spent at my parents' house are my very very favorite.

Side note: Matan you were really, really missed!

And ended with an evening walk around Balboa Island to see the Christmas lights. I think Balboa Island is magical during the holidays. Everywhere you look, you see Christmas lights reflecting off the water, and yachts boats (cough it is Newport Beach) covered in Christmas lights are parked at their docks. Many of the Christmas light displays are even synced up to Christmas music. As my mom put it, "walking around Balboa Island during December really makes you feel the spirit of the holiday season".

I believe in tradition, and I believe in passing tradition to one's children, and their children. Even at this age I still really, really look forward to Hanukkah, and celebrating with the people I love. There's just nothing like lighting candles with family, reminiscing, and sharing in the traditions we've done every year since I was a baby. Yes, I've been known to get teary eyed when lighting a Hanukkiah (aka menorah), some traditions make me emotional. (Cough my name is Tammy and I cry at anything that is remotely sentimental.)
I may not celebrate Christmas, but walking around Balboa Island during the holidays is also one of my favorite holiday traditions. In fact, it's something I've looked forward to every single year since I was a little kid, and really it's something I've been talking about since the beginning of November...

That's the beauty in tradition,
ancient traditions remain, but new ones can be added along the way.

Oh Tammy... you came home and didn't even call me. I would have cried with you lighting the menorah! There was a baptism at my church on Sunday (two actually, the babies were twins!) and I cried. And I cried again singing traditional Christmas hymns. Oh holidays... I love love love them.

I love the sound of all these holiday lights!! I grew up on Long Island where everyone lights up their house and I know some people consider it to be trashy, but I had so much fun as a kid going around the neighborhood looking at the little or big creative efforts people had gone to. My family is now in Connecticut where lights on a house are maybe 1 in 15 and it just doesn't have the same spirit to it.

I don't know what it is about lights...and water (the sparkles from the sunshine or the moon)...but they are truly magical. I'd be excited to see that each year too!

Any excuse to spend time with family is what's most important!

I love that you're sharing a little bit about Hanukkah. (I don't know much about it). :)
